(1/2) その昔「だまし絵」のエッシャーについて書かれた本を色々読んだ時期があった。『ゲーデル、エッシャー、バッハ―あるいは不思議の環』は今でも読み継がれている名著で、現在のAIの設計にも影響を与えたであろう「自己言及」について深堀りしている。ただ、著者が本当に模索していたのは、ここでは説明しきれていない(そして今のAI開発者が見落としがちな)『非言語的な混沌(カオス)の世界』に対する人間の認知の仕組みではなかったかと思う。

AIや機械学習の普及で、フィールドワーク(野外調査)をしない研究者が増えているという。開花時期の予測や鳥の移動パターンの観察など、データサイエンスが可能にする領域は多く、テクノロジーの貢献は大きい。ただ、それが現場経験の価値を失わせるわけではない。「自然に触れずして自然を研究する」ことに、ワクワクを感じ続けられるかは、その人の取り組み方や動機次第だと思う。音楽も同じようなところがある。

この「Rambler and Canter」は、田舎道を散策し、ときに駆けるような牧歌的な風景をイメージして作った曲。最初『Here and You』(2002)に収録されたこの曲、『New Classics Vol.1』(2018)のリリースにあたり、リズムや音のメリハリを調整した。当初は乗馬の映像を合わせていたが印象が弱く、シンクロ感のあるパンチの効いた素材を探すうちに、なぜか米国小売チェーンのCM風ショート動画に変貌してしまった(笑)。
