僕がお風呂でよく流しているディスコファンク系のラジオから、Alton Edwardsのこの曲が聴こえてくる。とてもキャッチーなシンセ・ブギーだが、実は知ったのは割と最近だ。UK産でアルバムリリースのないアーティストだったため、当時の日本にはあまり入ってこなかったのだろう。六本木の「ウィナーズ」あたりなら12インチが置いてあったかもしれないが、上京したての大学生だった僕は、一人で深夜の六本木にフラっと立ち寄るほどの肝が据わっていなかった。

マリー・シェーファーの『世界の調律』は、サウンドスケープを理解する上での大古典。彼は「人類が最初に聴いた音は水(海)の音だ」と言う。一方、僕らは鼻息や心臓が脈打つ音、そしておならの爆発音まで、「自分の身体が出す音」からは終生逃れられないよなあ……。そんなことを考えていたら、それを極めて格調高く、アカデミックかつ哲学的に伝えようとしたのが、かのジョン・ケージだったらしい。上品すぎて今頃気づいたわ(笑)。

各AIサービスの最新バージョンの優劣を追いかけることには特に熱心ではないけれど、生成AIの思想的な根底にあるアーキテクチャが今後どうなるのかを探るのは面白い。現在普及しているTransformerに対抗して登場したMambaというモデルは、マルコフ連鎖という確率手法と深い関係があるというので、開発者の一人Albert Gu氏の講義を観てみた。AI投資のホラ吹き競争ではなく、このように現場で「知の競争」が進んでいるのを見るのは楽しい。
