「言語化ブーム」への違和感は以前も書いたが、それ以上に「聞く力」や「質問する力」が後回しになっていることが問題だ。会話であれメールであれ、相手の意図を汲み取る前に「どう言語化するか」に走るのは、車輪がないのにエンジンだけを吹かしているようなものだ。自己主張の国である米国ですら、最近は「アクティブ・リスニング」が注目されている。経験から言えば、仕事のトラブルの大半は「聞けていない、飲み込めていない」ことが原因だと思う。

先日、豚を愛でるチャーチルの言葉を紹介したが、対照的にバーナード・ショーは「豚とレスリングをするな。泥まみれになるし、豚はそれを喜ぶからだ」と遺した。豚には大層失礼な話だ。要は「君子危うきに近寄らず」なのだが、SNS全盛の昨今、「反応しない=同じ土俵に乗らずにスルーを貫く」のはさぞ難しいのだろう。ただ、自己顕示欲や承認欲求におぼれる人間とは違って、豚は純粋に泥を楽しんでいるだけだ。やっぱりショーの言葉は豚に失礼だと思う。

Merriam-Webster辞典の「Word of the Day」を聴き始めて3、4年。難易度は高く、パッと分かるのは半分くらいで、数日全滅することもある。昨日の「jejune(幼稚な)」も初耳だったが、米国の認知度はわずか5〜10%。「アンチ・ボキャブラリー」が基本のアメリカでこれを使うと「気取っている」と思われる可能性があるが、英国人がこういう高尚な表現を使うのを聞くと「さすが、知的でクール」と崇められる。何やねんそれ(笑)。
