(編集・再掲)何年かおきに、小倉を訪ねたくなる最大の理由は「松本清張記念館」があるから。僕にとってあの場所は、40歳を過ぎたデビューから700超の作品を遺した、彼の驚異的な創作力を肌で感じられる「パワースポット」なのだ。創作の原動力となったハングリーさや闘志、そして劣等感。人類が月や火星へ行く時代になっても、これらはお金で買うことはできない。芥川賞受賞作の『或る「小倉日記」伝』は、ずっしり重い初期の傑作。

ILMやピクサーのドキュメンタリーを観ると、設立当初の奔放な姿勢は影を潜め、巨額の予算と重責から「失敗が許されない構造」へと変貌したことが分かる。失敗の回避は往々にして予定調和を招く。しかし、そうならないために、彼らは小規模なプロジェクトを重ね、意図的に試行錯誤を繰り返しているようだ。大失敗を避けるには、小さな失敗を積み重ねるほかない。創作に限らず、「小さく始めて、小さく、沢山失敗する」ことが前進の秘訣だろう。

「言語化ブーム」への違和感は以前も書いたが、それ以上に「聞く力」や「質問する力」が後回しになっていることが問題だ。会話であれメールであれ、相手の意図を汲み取る前に「どう言語化するか」に走るのは、車輪がないのにエンジンだけを吹かしているようなものだ。自己主張の国である米国ですら、最近は「アクティブ・リスニング」が注目されている。経験から言えば、仕事のトラブルの大半は「聞けていない、飲み込めていない」ことが原因だと思う。
